Prem Sagar, Son Of Legendary Filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, Passes Away; Arun Govil Offers Condolences | People News

New Delhi: Prem Sagar, veteran producer, cinematographer, and son of legendary filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, passed away on Sunday. Reports state that he took his last breath at 10 AM after being admitted to a hospital in Mumbai. His cremation will take place in Juhu.

The film and television fraternity is mourning the loss of the noted cinematographer, who played a crucial role in carrying forward the Sagar family’s legacy in Indian television and cinema.

An alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune (1968 batch), Prem Sagar worked extensively under the Sagar Arts banner, which was founded by his father. He is best remembered for his work on the iconic Doordarshan series Ramayan (1987), where he served as a still photographer and cinematographer.

Apart from Ramayan, Prem Sagar Contributed to Several Popular Television Shows, Including Vikram Aur Betaal and Shri Krishna. His work extended to films as well, where he was the cinematography for movies such as Lalkar, Aankhen, and Charas Starring Dharmendra and Hema Malini. He also directed and produced the jetendra-hema malini starr hum tere aashiq hai.

Prem Sagar is survived by his son, producer Shiv Sagar.

Expressing grief over his demise, Ramayan’s lead actor Arun Govil wrote on social media: “The news of the demise of Shri Prem Sagar ji, son of the late Shri Ramanand Sagar ji—who, through the Ramayan TV serial, brought Lord Shri Ram’s dignity, ideals, and teachings to every household via electronic media and a renowned film producer himself, is deeply saddening. We pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant the departed soul a place at His divine feet and to give strength to the bereaved family to bear this profound grief. Om Shanti.”

Actor Sunil Lahiri, who portrayed Laxman in Ramayan, also expressed shock on X (formerly Twitter): “Absolutely shocking news. We lost Prem Sagar Ji, son of Ramanand Sagar ji of Ramayan. Om Shanti.”
